Souluble

I created this video as a visual aid to youth group discussion on how sin affects us and how God handles it. It was a very simple setup:

Lighting kit
White sheets
Red food coloring
A few drinking glasses and a bowl
Water

Everything was filmed at 60 frames per second. Because the food coloring moves so slowly (after the initial drop, of course), slowing the footage down to 40% in post brought the motion to a near stand still.

The closest shots were achieved with a Tamron 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6 lens with the macro switch on. Everything else was filmed with a Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 lens. Speed changes were accomplished using time remapping in Premiere Pro. Color correction and a handful of effects were added using After Effects.

I happened to stumble accross the music and it perfectly fit what I was trying to do. It begins slowly and (to my ear) has a sinister quality at the beginning. But midway through the song, the tone changes and it sounds much more hopeful as it builds to a clean finish. The song can be found on jamendo.com (creative commons license)…

Earthen Vessels

I recently collaborated with Aaron Bryant of Hands On Films to film this short piece called A Potter’s Work. Aaron did most of the work on this thing, including all the editing and sound. The only part I played was filming the “macro” close ups:

I was pleasantly surprised to see how well the macro shots turned out, considering that I used a really cheap lens to film them. I used a Tamron 70-300 mm with Macro capability. This lens is currently available for less than $160 at Amazon.

The lens is terrible for still photography. When zoomed in all the way (300 mm) there are all kinds of problems with the image. However, most of these imperfections are not that noticeable in video. That’s because HD video is only 1920 x 1080 pixels. Still photography shots (from my T2i) are 2.7 times as wide and involve 8.64 times as many pixels in the total image.

This lens is a great option for DSLR videographers, allowing for some interesting and creative shots at a price most of us can justify. Be prepared to shoot under bright conditions as the macro function only works at the long end of the lens. You’ll be shooting at f/5.6 on any macro shots. This is also a decent multipurpose zoom lens. I use it for wedding videography as well – works great in bright settings.

Service

This is a short video about why our church does service projects in our community. The footage was from several projects we did on Halloween. The intro clips were filmed a few days prior. (Note the nice sunny fall weather! Halloween was rainy!)

ACC Service from Pilothouse Films on Vimeo.

The “miniaturized” look on the beginning clips was achieved using After Effects. It was an attempt to recreate the effect of using a tilt-shift lens.

The process for the effect:
1) Graduated blur to the top of the image (background elements)
2) Graduated blur to the bottom of the image (foreground elements)
3) Saturate the colors
4) Increase the contrast
5) Play the footage at about 2x to 4x speed

For the sake of time, I didn’t flesh out the technique fully. For example, in the shot of the neighborhood, looking down the hill, the telephone pole that falls inside the focus area should be entirely sharp all the way up. I didn’t take the time to mask out that portion. In that sense, the illusion is blown if you look closely.

Sliding with Pumpkins

This was a test of a new homemade DIY slider setup. It’s a couple if PVC pipes screwed into a length of wood, with T-shaped PVC for sliding along the pipes. I demolished an old tripod to bolt it onto another piece of wood so it could ride the rails. Instructions for the slider can be found in this video from Indy Mogul.

Mine isn’t perfect, and the old tripod head I used is far less than ideal. Still, I managed to get a few mostly smooth shots with it.

Music is the instrumental version of “Model Home” by Brad Sucks – creative commons.

Modification

After getting some logo tips from a graphic-designer friend of mine, I made the following modifications:

Color

Added color and shine to that logo…Final-PF-Logo-2-Color-for-web

Logo

I decided to design an actual logo instead of relying on simple initials:

Final-PF-Logo-BW-for-Web

Logos aren’t supposed to need explaining…but…there is a ship’s wheel because that’s what you would find in a ship’s pilothouse. In the center of the wheel is a film reel. Some color may help to distinguish the two pieces, but logos are supposed to be designed in black and white. I tried to keep the shapes simple. It actually took a long time to finally decide on what to cut out and what to keep in the final design. I settled on only the necessary circle shapes plus the wheel handles. I think it came out OK. Now I just need to design a mind-blowing animation of this logo to place at the front or back of my videos.

Hello Neighbor.

This is a 15-second ad I did for Red Canoe Credit Union. It will be shown at local movie theaters in the Kelso/Longview area. (Concept and logo animation by Matt Milligan)

Weddings

Weddings come with lots of bells and whistles and Pilothouse Films just had the privilege of ushering in a new type of bell…or maybe it’s a whistle. A Simpler Wedding Registry is a website that lets you set up a custom registry with gifts from any store in the world. Rather than picking one or two stores to register at, ASWR allows you to jump on the Internet and add gifts from anywhere. It really is a neat idea and I can see the value and convenience of using this site. Pilothouse Films produced this promotional video for ASimplerWeddingRegistry.com. Be sure to pass this along to any engaged couples you know!
